August Newsletter: National Breastfeeding Awareness Month

Happy National Breastfeeding Awareness Month! It is our favorite time of the year. Every year, we celebrate this month and Black Breastfeeding Week, which is from August 25th through August 31st. You can learn more about the importance of Black Breastfeeding Week here. We've had a busy month already and look forward to a full week ahead, so mark your calendars for all of our Black Black Breastfeeding Week events.


August 25th, 12-1pm ET - Instagram Live with Pregnancy Matters, LLC.



Join us for a conversation with Mrs. Jocelyne Crosby Agbeko, Midwifery Officer, Midwifery Tutor, Certified Breastfeeding Specialist, and Founder of Pregnancy Matters LLC.

We will be discussing her work, research interests, and all things Black births and breastfeeding in Ghana. Kick off Black Breastfeeding Week with us and tune in to our global conversation next week.



August 27th, 12-1pm ET - Webinar by the National Association to Advance Black Births

On Friday, August 27th, Dr. Ayanna Robinson will be presenting on the webinar titled, "Breast/Chestfeeding while Black: Real Stories from Black Parents on the Successes and Challenges of their Journeys". Register for this event at nabbwebinar.eventbrite.com.



August 29th, 10am - 12pm ET - Golden Bow Breastfeeding Walk by Loyal Lactation, LLC.

On Sunday, August 29th, come out to JP Mosley Park in Stockbridge, Georgia for the 2nd Annual Golden Bow Breastfeeding Walk. This event is organized and hosted by Loyal Lactation, LLC. We will be vending at the event alongside a host of other vendors, including Mystic Momma and Wild Birth Partum Care. We had a great time at the walk in 2019 and look forward to participating in the 2nd annual event. There will be activities for the entire family. August 30th and 31st (all day) - National Maternal Health Innovation Symposium



If you are attending the National Maternal Health Innovation Symposium, check out our Spark Session titled, "Preparing Black Women and Birthing Individuals for Birth, Breastfeeding, and Beyond Virtually" with BGBC Founder, Ayanna Robinson, Ph.D., MPH.


This session will explore our bEarth Work App and our use of technology to leverage the knowledge, skills, expertise of Black birthworkers to support and provide education to Black women on prenatal and postpartum health.

August 31st, 6pm - 8pm ET - The Big Pause: Breastfeeding Boot Camp by Black Girls' Breastfeeding Club, LLC.



On the last day of Black Breastfeeding Week, join us for our Second Annual Breastfeeding Boot Camp. The theme for Black Breastfeeding Week this year is, "The Big Rest: Collective Rest for Collective Power". In addition to providing breastfeeding education and Q&A from lactation professionals, we will also have a workshop around rest and self-care for new moms/breastfeeding moms and a guided yoga/meditation activity led by a Kundalini yoga instructor.


There will be giveaways and all participants will receive a gift bag with items to prepare for their breastfeeding and motherhood journeys. Special thanks to our event sponsors, Medela and Earth Mama Organics. Register for this free virtual event here.
